John William Rayleigh was a British physicist who discovered the element argon. In 1873, on the death of his father, John Strutt, 2nd Baron Rayleigh, he inherited the Barony of Rayleigh. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1904. From 1908 until his death in 1919 he was Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.
