After giving up practicing law in 1806 to become the private secretary for William Windham, the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies, Amyot held a series of posts in the Colonial Office: he was secretary and registrar for Lower Canada from 1807 (a sinecure post); he was appointed registrar on the creation of the Office for the Registry of Colonial Slaves in 1819; and between 1833 and 1840, he was a commissioner for slave compensation.
