Scope and content
'Very many thanks for your noble and manly letter in defence of de Wet, a brave and clever man, a true patriot, the base calumnies uttered against him only make him stand out more prominently. Alas! these Calumnies tend to shew how this Country is deteriorating. This horrible War is the First one that we ever Outnumbered our foes... when we outnumber our foes by 8. to 1 . it is outrageously bad taste, and utterly senseless, to brag and boast, and burst out into hysterical enthusiasm about our Valour and our pluck! but what can be expected of a Nation that likes to be governed by a half educated Screw Manufacturer?'.
