Scope and content

53 Harley Street, London - CL has read WW's letter with great pleasure [WW's comments on CL's book: 'The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man, with remarks on the Origin of Species', 1863]. CL's chapter on languages was the last planned section and 'grew naturally out of my habit of thinking of the changes of languages when I wanted to clear up some of my own ideas about transmutation'. Max Muller - at CL's request read this chapter - and only objected to one thing while praising the rest.
