        History

Cecil Wray Dalton was born at Copgrove, where his father was rector.

According to Alumni Cantabrigienses Dalton he was aged 19 when he was admitted at Magdalene College on 19 December 1823, which would indicate that he was born in 1803 or 1804, but the same work records that he was 82 at the time of his death on 14 June 1888, which implies that he was born in 1805 or 1806. Since his age is given in the 1851 census as 45, in the 1861 census as 55, and in the 1881 census as 75, it would appear that his age on admission at Magdalene is stated wrongly.
