        History

Donald Frederic Duce was born at Walsall on 21 March 1910 and was educated at Walsall Grammar School and Trinity College, Cambridge. He took his BA in 1931 but stayed at Cambridge for another year for teacher training. During this year he met his wife, Eleanor, who was taking the same course, and both became modern language teachers. After a short period in West Yorkshire, they moved to Norwich. Donald was called up for military service in 1940, but registered as a conscientious objector, and spent the War and some time afterwards as a farm labourer and factory worker.
