This box contains a miscellaneous grouping of material, some gathered by William Whewell, some by Cordelia Whewell and retained by William after her death, and some material gathered after William's death by his executor James L. Hammond.

The 47 letters from Julius Charles Hare to William Whewell date from 1822-1850 (Items 126-162).

The collection of franks of bishops and peers (Items 5-125, and 273-323) appears to have been created by Cordelia Whewell. Another part of this frank collection is housed as Add.MS.a.80/163-238. Cordelia also gathered a collection of autographs (housed as Add.MS.c.65-66).

The letters to James Hammond from Ann Newton, William Whewell's sister, are dated after William's death and concern his papers and the preparation of a biography (Items 163- 172, 174-206). The other letters to Hammond are in response to his appeal for letters from Whewell for use in a biography (Items 207-272) and are written by Whewell's correspondents or by the children or relatives of his correspondents. Some of these letters sent by these people may have been added to the collection elsewhere, and the letters in this box may provide evidence of provenance for these items.
