Would you really like to have Sylvia and Anthony and me all to dine on Friday? Because if you think you can have so many, we would love to come as the rest of our party have refused to come. Or, if your people are not coming, will you come to us?

I’m afraid I cant dine Tuesday. If Friday is impossible would you like to lunch Saturday?

I heard very fine dewdrops about you to day from Winston.

[24 Queen Anne’s Gate, S.W.]——Has lost the long letter she was writing to him. Last Saturday she went to Breccles. Discusses the progress of the work there, which is proving expensive. Last night she dined with Winston. Reggie says that Geddes is not coming back from Italy and that Dalziel is to take his place at the Admiralty. Reggie and Winston are on very good terms now. On Friday [8th] she went to a party at Cardie’s given by Bouch, who is home on leave, and on Thursday she gave a dinner-party and they had stunts. Afterwards Ralph [Peto] took some of them on to a party at Ruby’s. Discusses the air-raids, in response to his telegram about the bombs in Queen Anne’s Gate. Has just come back from a day with Dolly and Jimmy. K is dining with her tonight; Bluey is much better. Is eager for Montagu’s return. Is planning to go to Breccles for a holiday. She has been busier than usual this month at Charing Cross and Arlington Street as the sister has been ill. Discusses plans for furnishing the rooms [at Breccles]. Next week Bouch will probably give a farewell party, and the Jimmys may dine on Wednesday.

Alderley Park, Chelford, Cheshire.—Has told her father of their intention to marry on the 26th, and urges Montagu to procure the licence soon. Her father has put her fortune into settlement. Her mother will come up on Tuesday and stay the following week. Arranges to meet him for lunch and then go together to Folkestone. Commends her father’s behaviour.

[The British Hospital, Wimereux.]—Has received his two letters. Is glad that the Prime Minister is pleased by Violet and Bongie’s engagement. Discusses the arrangements for her return to England. Is glad that Sylvia will have Anthony at home for a week or so, but fears for his safety if he transfers to a regiment in the fighting line. Is pleased at Birrell’s approval [of their engagement]. Has met Lord Wemyss, and may dine with him tomorrow. Asks for news of Edward’s progress.

[The British Hospital, Wimereux.]—(20th.) Denies that she has changed her mind about marrying him, and discusses her reasons for staying at the hospital.—(21st.) Has received his letter. Discusses arrangements for meeting him when he comes to France. Refuses to return home on Thursday, but agrees to do so in August. Has seen Anthony. Suggests going to Fontainebleau.

[The British Hospital, Wimereux.]—(15th.) Is still convalescing. Anthony is coming to see her tomorrow. Her mother has written to say that she has spoken to Montagu and thinks they should settle their affairs quickly. Refers to the religious fervour of a letter Montagu once received from his sister, and wonders if she will meet any of his family when she returns to England.—(16th.) There is general delight at the news of renewed fighting and expected work, but it may prevent Anthony’s visit.

[The British Hospital, Wimereux.]—Is depressed, because her injuries prevent her from working. Is thinking of going to [a casualty clearing station at] Hazebrouck, where she would be near Oliver and Anthony. Has received his letter [B1/128], and commends his ‘robust’ reaction to her own. The Prime Minister too has sent her a ‘divine’ letter, but she reassures Montagu that they will never renew their old relationship. Reflects on her last weeks in England. Discusses the plans for their marriage.

[The British Hospital, Wimereux.]—(13th.) She nearly wrote him a horrible letter three hours ago, when she was feeling depressed by her sore knee. Has received his letter. Anthony told her he had been to see Montagu and liked him.—(14th.) Has spent the morning in bed, waiting to see the doctor.

[The British Hospital, Wimereux.]—(12th.) Is having an uneventful half-day off work, but will see Oliver and Anthony later. Discusses the progress of her injuries. Has dined with Major Hunter. Has received Montagu’s letter. Discusses her decision to remain in Wimereux, and refers to Bluey’s sadness at losing his position. Asks when Diana is coming to France, and about Margot’s attitude towards herself.—(Later.) Describes her evening with Noll and Anthony, and reflects on her moodiness.—(13th.) Feels better.

[Eleven miles from Wimereux.]—Has just had a motorcycle accident, but is in good spirits.

[The British Hospital, Wimereux.]—On her return to the hospital she was confined to bed for the afternoon. Is meeting Oliver and Anthony tomorrow; Gilbert has gone away for a week.

[By the sea at Wimereux, and at the British Hospital.]—Has received his letter and a parcel. Reassures him of her love for him. She has been bored, but may be able to see Anthony if he doesn’t go back to England tomorrow. She cannot explain her reasons for postponing her return.

[The British Hospital, Wimereux.]—Discusses arrangements for meeting him. Is seeing Anthony tomorrow, and saw Geoffrey yesterday.
