4 The Gables, Vale of Health, Hampstead, N.W.3. - Thanks Trevelyan for sending the book ["Three Plays: Sulla, Fand, The Pearl-tree"]: is 'very much honoured' to have a signed copy. Loves the two new plays, though 'naturally' likes "Fand" best [having performed in it in 1929]. Asks if "Sulla" has ever been staged; wishes it could be put on at Oxford, though a 'marvellous person' would have to be found to play the Satyr, on whom so much depends. Has been with the Greater London Players recently, and has just played Raina in [Shaw's] "Arms and the Man" with them, which was 'rather fun'. Very glad Trevelyan was able to find a copy of "Fand": must have been worrying not to have one when he wanted to publish it [see also 20/84]. If he ever produces another play, with a 'tiny part or a "noise off"' or something else she could do, would 'love to work for [him] again'.
34 Victoria Road, Swindon, Wilts. - Apologises for not replying sooner: has changed her address and Trevelyan's letter has been 'following [her] about'. Knows she sent her copy of Trevelyan's 'Cuchulain play' ["Fand"] back last September or October; hopes he finds a copy, and is sorry she did not keep hers; remembers 'returning it reluctantly from Weston-Super-Mare'. Margaret Rawlings (Mrs Toyne) is playing in "Caviare" at the Little Theatre in the Adelphi; Hubert Langley played the Yew Tree, she does not know where he is currently, but he sometimes acts at the Lyric, Hammersmith. She toured last spring with the "Misdoings of Charley Peace" [by Edward Percy] and played the lead in [Mary Pendered's] "The Quaker on 10 November, which examined 'the Friends' attitude towards the right to kill'. Acted in [Anthony Merryn's] "The Undiscovered Country" at the Players' Theatre, a 'most interesting part', though she fears the 'play was rather dull'. Very kind of Trevelyan to say he will send her a copy of the play [his "Fand", in which she acted in 1929] when it is published; will 'treasure it dearly'; asks if he can sign it. Note by address saying that this is where her 'People' [parents] live and will always work as an address for her.
5, The Terrace, Gillygate, York. - Afraid she cannot get to London on Thursday afternoon; her company are performing at the Theatre Royal every night for three and a half more weeks, and rehearse every day, so she can only make Sundays, except for 14 July when the company will travel from York to Bath. Is sorry to miss this rehearsal, and to be 'such a nuisance about dates'.
5, The Terrace, Gillygate, York. - Thanks Trevelyan for his letter; would love to breakfast with him. Is coming to London by bus; asks if she can meet him at the National Liberal Club at nine in the morning. Looks forward to going through the play [Trevelyan's "Fand"] with him.
5, The Terrace, Gillygate, York. - Will be pleased to come to a rehearsal [for Trevelyan's play "Fand"] on 7 July; will travel to and back from London by night train, so is free all day. Asks if the rehearsal will be at 11 St Leonard's Terrace as before. It is 'lovely to have "Immortal Hour" costumes' [a reference to the opera by Rutland Boughton]. Gives her height and waist measurements; her hair is 'gingery-red'.
Lena Ashwell Players, Theatre Royal, York. - Thanks Trevelyan for his play ["Fand"], which she thinks 'very beautiful'; loves her part. Has never had a 'part with any hate in it before' so will be interesting to play it. Asks if they are to have costumes for the play, and whether the actors are to make them themselves. Her hair is 'only neck length', but she would wear a wig if Trevelyan wants her character, Emer, to have long hair. Is going away for a 'sea trip' on Thursday so should have plenty of time to learn her part. Very glad that it is all right about the Sunday rehearsals [the only day she can make: see 20/79]
Lena Ashwell Players, Prince of Wales Theatre, Rugby. - Thanks Trevelyan for his letter; would love to act in his play ["Fand"]. Since however she has rehearsals every day and performances every night, she only has Sundays to rehearse. Could however come up to London then for rehearsals except on 5 May, when the company travels to York, 17 May to 2 June, when she is taking a holiday, and 14 July when the company travels from York to Bath. Hopes this is not too inconvenient.
