Dated 9th January, 1897 - Describes the work of the Polynesian Society, wishes they had started to keep records 50 years before, sends all the back numbers of their journals not out of print and a copy of his Comparative Dictionary; asks if he has found references to the Caesarian operation used by 'ancient people', and about old gods and their joints; asks for information on obtaining an honorary degree, would like colonial writers better represented.
