Ashfield. - Her father read his paper 'A Historical Sketch of Warrington Academy' to the Historic Society of Lancashire and Cheshire on 11 Nov. 1858; he based it upon rescued memoranda of the Rev. J. Seddon; can send a copy, or Houghton might care to visit; her father's own copy is embellished with interesting letters and notes about Warrington. Cannot send 'Use of Books to Working Men' as their only perfect copy is bound with other items; it was a lecture to the Tuckerman Institute of Liverpool on 14 Feb. 1855. Encloses two hymns [no longer present], a sonnet on Longfellow and one on Mr Green; her father did not wish them to be republished. No news of Allan yet.
Enclosure: Copy of Henry Bright's verse 'To Longfellow in England, 1868', "as it appeared in Mr Hall Caine's Sonnets of Three Centuries" [copy made 1884?].
Ashfield. - Values book for its own sake and as proof of friendship; it is reviewed in today's Athenaeum. Has given letter to General [Lucius? Fair]child: his advice on ship-cruelty will assist Houghton towards a decision. Missed showing the Sailors' Home to the King of the Belgians this morning.

Ashfield, Knotty Ash, Liverpool. - Has now read Monographs; interested by depiction of social change as much as the subjects themselves; might get to London for a 'life-bath' next week; hopes General Fairchild will contact Houghton. Postscript. - encloses epigram which belongs of right to Houghton. Enclosed: Verse, 'A Refectory', copied by H. A. Bright.

E[ast] I[ndia] C[ollege]. - Struck by Milnes' essay ['The Menace of War in Germany'?]; suggest corrections, including a heading, 'The Conference at Dresden'. Postscript: 'Bright says Brooks experience does not warrant the hope of an entire recovery, in a case like [?] Palmy's'.
Embossed notepaper, Ashfield, Knotty Ash. - Thanks Houghton for copies of Miscellanies; Henry would have been pleased by his sympathetic words; Lady Galway's kindness at Cannes when Hugh was ill; he has returned much better, and she has found a possible tutor for him in the New Forest.

Ashfield. - Encloses notes at Houghton's request; glad he plans to write an article on Henry for the Philobiblon; Henry said he owed much of his happiness to his friendship with Houghton; has bequeathed him an unpublished poem of [Robert?] Bloomfield's, which was one of his most valued autographs; her sons are returning from the Mediterranean.
Enclosure: notes on career of Henry Bright, including his gardening and other writings; with brief reference to his late brother Hugh [1884?].
Ashfield. - Encloses list of manuscripts collected by her father; he particularly valued a MS volume of writings by American authors; it was exchanged with Mr Fields of Boston for Mayall's photograph of Hawthorne, of which only one impression was taken of the time; does not know of items relating to American independence but most of the Presidents were represented, though Mr Randolph Robinson did not quite succeed in filling all the gaps; her father also had some interesting stamps. [Letter incomplete: end missing].

On embossed notepaper, Fryston Hall, Ferrybridge. - Request for Volumes 9 onwards of Miscellanies to be sent to the Earl of Dufferin at Clandeboye; will send a note of the payment owing. Adds postscript: Mr Turner and Mr Bright will send sheets for press.
Traveller's Hotel, Pall Mall. - Corrected proof of Bright's article on Mme Roland to be sent to him at Ashfield, Knotty Ash; asks whether Lord Acton has sent preface.
On embossed notepaper: Lanehead, Coniston, Lancashire. - Gives details of Henry Bright's career at Rugby School for Lord Houghton's memoir; Bright introduced Melly to the Gaskells in 1853; hopes Houghton will allow Melly a copy of the Memoir; 'there was no one whom Henry liked so much or who appreciated him so completely'.
Ashfield. - Gives details of her father Henry's school career; her mother has requested further information from his sisters; his Rugby and Cambridge friends; association with Dr Masters and the Gardeners' Chronicle; thinks hie did not know the Gaskells when young; many of Mrs Gaskell's letters here, including one seeking advice on how to address him. Allan left for Buenos Aires last week; Hughie is looking better.
