Part of Papers of Sir Peter Shaffer
Describes a sense of detachment he feels every so often on stage and a resulting understanding that he has come to in over 500 performances of 'Equus': that a play is part of the earth 'with all its tearing and screaming and pounding' but that this is just man's way of looking for release into a 'more beautiful satisfactory earth'; he laughs because 'some people go into the theatre at night to see and experience what has been ripped out of the body' during the day.
