Sir William Pearce died in 1907. His only connection with Trinity was that he rowed in the College boat. {1} He left, subject to his wife’s life interest, his residential estate, Chilton Lodge, Wiltshire, to Trinity College. His wife, a much younger person, died within a year, childless. The College decided to sell the estate which was valued at £80,000 approximately.

The guns stood on the lawn in front of Chilton Lodge. They were brought to Cambridge, put out of action, and placed in the Fellows Garden. In November, 1909 it was decided to remove them to the Bowling Green.

{1} This is curiously dismissive. Pearce spent a full three years at the College, graduating BA and LLB.

Trinity College, Cambridge - The Senior Bursar explains he is paying £100 into Sir James' account, and is also paying a half-year's stipend as Wyse Memorial Lecturer; the Council had relieved Sir James of the obligation to deliver a further course of lectures, but as Sir James has insisted on going ahead, Nicholas will pay the balance when the lectures have been delivered; the College Council were much impressed (but not surprised) by his determination to continue.

The papers consist of:
Two copies of an annotated typescript catalogue of the Newton library by Heinrich Zeitlinger in 1929, with a later copy of the book list with five more books added by H. M. Adams.
Cuttings about the Newton library dated 1942-1944.
One postcard from Tressilian Nicholas to H. M. Adams and fifteen letters dated August to October 1943 from Henry Sotheran Ltd and from Barnby, Bendall & Co. Ltd. to the Trinity College Librarian H. M. Adams concerning the shipping of the Newton library.
Later notes and letters about the books stored in the Muniments Room and value of the alchemical books in the collection with two letters dated 1943-1944 from Dorothea Waley Singer and John Read to C. D. Broad.
A later note from F. E. Manuel about manuscripts by and about Newton in the British Library, dated June 1957.

Research notes made from the King's Hall accounts, part of the Muniments of Trinity College, accompanied by two typed letters to Oswald from Trinity Senior Bursar Tressilian Nicholas dated May 1950 and October 1951 concerning arrangements to consult the papers. Accompanied by a photograph of King Edward's gate.

A note accompanying the letter is written on the back of a card from Tressilian Nicholas to Herbert Mayow Adams, dated 19 Jul., about a 'proposed visit to Cheltenham to inspect the Newton books'. The note explains that when Bucknall refers to 'the operations which we studied in your College', he means 'the military conference held in Trinity COllege from March 28th to April 1st 1944 , which laid plans for the invasion of France in June 1944.'

A letter from C. D. Broad to Hollond dated 22 May 1964 correcting Hollond's account of the interview for the television programme on Bertrand Russell, and expressing his desire to let Russell know that he had been interviewed but cut from the programme, accompanied by a copy letter from Hollond to Russell dated 26 May 1964 incorporating this information and enclosing a copy of a letter of protest at Broad's treatment to the B.B.C. television executives. Hollond's letter to Russell shares memories of Russell's visit to give the Lowell Lectures at Harvard University in the spring of 1914, mentioning the visit of Rupert Brooke, a dinner with Roscoe Pound, his reaction to a recital by Alfred Noyes, a visit with Mrs Fiske Warren, and a dinner party with Amy Lowell and Elizabeth Perkins; he also mentions speaking with Victor Purcell on the telephone after a visit with Russell, and remembering a conversation between T. C. Nicholas, and George Trevelyan about giving Russell a Title B Fellowship. With added notes at the bottom in Hollond's hand identifying people mentioned in the letter.

Trinity College, Cambridge - Has considered Lady Frazer's suggestion that Sir James' pension be increased, finds they are unable to do this according to College Statutes; suggests using the William Wyse Studentship Fund to make a grant of £100 for three years to pay for secretarial assistance.
