P.O. Moradpore, Bankipore. - Thanks Trevelyan for the letter and introductions, though he will not use them, since 'tapirs and Tagores tempt terribly, but samples of either can be met in England' and he wishes to stay in one place until going to the bathing festival at Allahabad. Is having trouble about his passage home and may have to sail from Karachi; Goodall (who was not at Calcutta to see Trevelyan) is dealing with it. Hopes Trevelyan is enjoying Southern India. Bankipore scenery 'quite tropical' because of the toddy palms and malaria-melons; Forster finds the place 'foul' but there is enough going on to amuse him. Likes [Charles] Russell, of Patna College, who has lent him Hiouen Tsang [Xuanzang], Johnstone (whom Trevelyan has dined with), and the Raja of Canika, who is here for the opening of the council. Masood thanks Trevelyan and Dickinson for their messages. Hopes the Karamazov family [Dostoevsky, "The Brothers Karamazov"] have arrived; he sent them to Madras,
Dewas, C. I. - Thanks Trevelyan for the letter and book, and for the information about Benares: he plans to go their shortly, leaving Hyderabad to the end if at all and missing out Southern India. Goodall will be in Calcutta from 7th January: would like to see Trevelyan and Dickinson and has their address. Indore 'pleasant but not striking'; the Luards very kind. Dewas is charming; the Raja, whom Forster met briefly at Indore, returns this evening and is 'a dear and a competent dear'. Luard thinks the colours in Forster's Jeypore landscape are all preliminary, which is disappointing, and that both pictures are 19th century at the earliest.
Harnham, Monument Green, Weybridge. - Branfoot is the head of the medical department of the India Office and recommended inoculation; Forster has just been seen at St Mary's Hospital. Gives details of the procedure and his reaction. Asks Dickinson to forward this letter to Bob [Trevelyan]. Asks what arrangements Dickinson has made about letters - he has had no luck with Cooks in Bombay as they did not buy tickets through them - and money. Goodall will probably be in Calcutta when they arrive. Darling has just lost his mother. The Trevelyans all looked very fit and happy when he saw them recently.
