Ordnance Press Office, Tower - During his survey of Cornwall, Devon and Somerset HTB obtained many organic remains, and the loan of many local collections of fossils. He applied and received a grant from the Treasury to enable Prof. [John] Phillips to describe and figure the organic remains. To make matters official could WW provide a testimonial indicating the importance to science of such a project, and a reference regarding Phillips's abilities [he has also applied to Adam Sedgwick and William Buckland].
