To AS's great sorrow he was unable to attend EA's party last night. His cold has got worse.
AS is up to his ears with examination papers.
AS would be happy to come to EA's dinner party next Friday. AS has hopefully prevented his bad cough turning into bronchitis by not going out in the evenings. AS has a tendency to feel giddy.
On his journey to Dent AS felt so tired at Newark station that he rested for two hours before going on to Leeds by a later train - 'now I am nearly well'. He found his brother [John Sedgwick] in a 'state of such disability - so weak as to be quite unable to keep up a conversation'.

AS meant to reply earlier to EA's invitation but through a combination of his bad cough and not sleeping he forgot. His plan of spending Christmas day with his sick brother [John Sedgwick] has not materialised.
