Office of Chinese Customs, Ningpo. - Met Houghton at Lord Milton's dinner to the Chinese Mission in 1866; has worked for the Mission in China for five years but wishes to return to England before age and ill health preclude another career; seeks post of Queen's Messenger to the Foreign Office; outlines project for opening a trade route between north-west Hindustan and China; increasing liberalism of the Chinese Government; compares alternative routes between China and Calcutta; would gladly assist in exploring them, either with or without support of the Foreign Office or the Royal Geographical Survey.
