Letter from Francis Hindes Groome to Bernard Quaritch
O./10a.42/No. 109 · Parte · 1 Dec. 1889
Parte de Manuscripts in Wren Class O

36 Warrender Park Terrace, Edinburgh. - Encloses the photograph of Little Grange promised in his first letter; since he wrote that, he has seen Blackwood and heard from Mowbray Donne, 'both of whom express much regret'. Points out a mistake in the preface of the 1887 edition of FitzGerald relating to E. B. Cowell's Cambridge connections. Clodd tells him there is a rose tree at Kew brought back from the grave of Omar Khayyám; thinks a scion should be planted over FitzGerald's grave in Boulge churchyard.

The photograph originally enclosed with the letter is pasted to a leaf following the letter.

3 Gloucester Terrace, Hyde Park, W. - Has never seen the original of the letter from which an extract appears in the Blackwood article on FitzGerald, nor the extract until it appeared there. Is surprised his father, 'usually so accurate', made such a mistake. Sends F. H. Groome's address, and has sent on Quaritch's letter to Groome as he himself knows nothing of the matter.

Monk Soham Rectory, Wickham Market, Suffolk - Hardly ever keeps letters, so has none of Edward FitzGerald's; indeed, generally only had notes or cards from him since they lived near to each other and 'kept our topics for such times as we met and talked them out'. Suggests John Allen, Dean Blakesley, Dean Merivale, the Master of Trinity and Mrs Thompson as people who could supply letters, but has 'misgivings whether such letters should be published, good and pleasant as they may be', questioning whether FitzGerald 'would have sanctioned it? He, who carefully tore up letters almost as soon as he received them'.

Encloses a letter from John Allen [ADD.MS.a/6/23?]. Thanks Crabbe for congratulations on the engagement of his son William to [Emma] Colvin.

Will not go to the auction, but would like to have catalogues. Mrs Ritchie (Miss Thackeray) should have some, as two of her father's drawings are on sale. 'Also Mowbray Donne, Allen and Crowfoot cum multis aliis'.

59 Montagu Square, W. - Reaction to the news of Edward FitzGerald's death. There 'should be some obituary mention of him', as Crabbe suggests. Would be 'in perfectly good hands' if Crabbe wrote it himself; Pollock does 'not know enough of the Persian scholarship and works' to write it, and recommends Aldis Wright if Crabbe does not wish to do it.

Adds in a postscript that he does not know Mrs Kemble's address, but has asked Mowbray Donne to write to her.
