Matai applied for a Colombo Plan Fellowship to study with Synge at the Food Research Institute, Norwich. He was notified of the award in December 1967 but delays thereafter meant he was unable to take up the post until October 1968. He returned to India in August 1970.

With W.M. Laird and S. Matai, Bibliog. 100 (1970). This was initially submitted to the Journal of the Chemical Society but rejected as of insufficient scientific interest. A revised version was accepted by the Biochemical Journal.
