Part of Papers of Edwin Montagu, Part II
Part 3. The British newspapers are pleased, but there is much disappointment elsewhere. He presumes that preparations for hartals will be carried out to the utmost extent. He is meeting a Moslem deputation this morning, but can only repeat to them what he said at Delhi, with the addition of the last part of Montagu’s official telegram.—(Later.) Montagu’s message gave much satisfaction to the deputation, a representative gathering which included the Nawab of Dacca and members of the Indian Legislature and the Bengal Legislative Council. He believes the latest answers to deputations have improved relations with Moslems.
