49 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park, London — Returns his maps. She has coloured her new maps similarly. Encloses a copy of her letter to Mrs Wood 're the Godfrey case'. Did not receive papers from him this morning.
Just received £140 for the Anaesthetic Emergency Fund, making a total of £700. Unsure if message from New Zealand is enquiring whether further funds are wanted or clarifying whether further funds should continue being cabled frequently in small amounts. Has drafted a response requesting further funds but clarifying no urgency in sending them.
Will attend to Saturday's letters as soon as he receives them. Mrs Wood believes their signing with joint signatures appears impersonal. He agrees, as it also obscures who is actually answering. Suggests they abandon joint signature procedures, as it was merely a formality.
Has received a letter from the High Commissioner of New Zealand stating the telegram was sent and that the Government will pay its cost.
Letters, drafts, and copy-letters, largely relating to Huia Onslow's role as Secretary of the Soldiers and Sailor's Families Association, London North West District, particularly the numerous donations to the Anaesthetics Emergency Fund from New Zealand. Correspondents include: Elizabeth A. Sharp, the other Secretary of the Fund: George Frederick Copus of the New Zealand High Commission: William Edward Collins, doctor, on board the New Zealand Hospital Ship 'Maheno' (one letter encloses a printed diet table for a hospital ship or carrier); Duncan Flockhart & Co., Manufacturing Chemists.
49 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park, London — Asks Onslow to serve as treasurer for the New Zealand money. Wants some sent to the Scottish Women's Hospital in Malta. Can come on Friday to discuss the Committee meeting. Nervous about the Divisional (District) Committee. Recommends Rupert Brooke's poetry.
49 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park, London — Is in contact with the Red Cross and St John's Head Quarters about sending supplies to Malta 'or wherever the New Zealanders are'. They accept everything except hydrogen peroxide. Will send at least £100 worth.
Encloses copy of letter received from National Relief Fund. Mrs Riddel might send account of Anaesthetics Emergency Fund. Asks his view. Proposes 'statement of moneys' received from England and Scotland. Asks how to describe his relationship to New Zealand and which 'Maori tribe' he is connected to. Asks for Dr Collins' exact title. Requests Fiona Macleod papers back.
49 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park, London — Ordered around £140 of supplies for the Red Cross and St John Ambulance for 'Malta and Alexandria'. Clarifying the assistance required elsewhere. Sees 'gifts from the colonies' noted in the papers occasionally. Feels their donators should be publicly acknowledged. Suggests Onslow writes to the High Commissioner to pledge some supplies for hospitals treating New Zealand soldiers.
Glad orders are going to Malta and Alexandria. Putting something in the paper about New Zealand donations and writing to the High Commissioner both good ideas.
Supplies will be sent to Walton on Thames Hospital if desired. Wrote two suggestions to the Committee mentioning the money was received through Mackenzie's office, one of which was accepted. Would appreciate it being forwarded to the Press Association.
49 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park — Took the N. Z. letter to the High Commissioner's office to save time. The secretary informed her that 'several things even from the [High Commissioner] have not been printed!'
Westminster Chambers, 13 Victoria Street, London — Mrs William Sharp called at the office a few days ago. The letter on New Zealand's donations was sent for publication and appeared in several papers.
Apologises for not responding to letters. Agrees with informing the Record Department on the Anaesthetics Emergency Fund's activities. Encloses an letter from Dr Collins. Duncan Flockhart and Co. have receipted their bill. Would prefer 'the Maori tribe business' be left out. He is associated with the 'Ngati Huia' and 'Ngati Rakawa' iwi.
49 Cambridge Street — Asks if he has written to the Divisions to announce his resignation. If so she must follow. The two women approached to take over their roles declined. She is willing to continue for a fortnight if needed, but Mr Hawkins and Mrs Wood have been handling the last few cases so there is nothing to do.
Dr Collins cabled another £1040. Has thanked him and sent a cutting of the letter in the Morning Post. Wonders when their successor will be appointed.
49 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park — Received the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Association enclosures. Sent a card to Mrs Purcell about the Holtman case. Encloses a bill. The New Zealand money is useful as the Fund is depleted to £30.
49 Cambridge Street — The Holton case was passed to Mr Hawkins as it was complicated and urgent. Appears to have received the wrong amount of money. Will return if so. Considering sending a further statement of donations to papers, but doesn't think it will be printed. Mislaid Dr Collins' address. Mrs Riddel wants to send supplies to Serbia but she is against it. Asks his opinion.
His sister Gwenny has been approached as their successor, but probably won't take the role. The cheque accidentally included a sum that was already paid. Approaching the papers about the New Zealand donation is unnecessary. Agrees funds should not be sent to Serbia, but to France, with some kept for the Dardanelles when requested by New Zealand.
45 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park, London — Handed the files to Lady Gwendoline. Her work will be easier than theirs, as the relationship between County Office and Districts is being restructured. Fewer representatives from the Soldiers' and Sailors' Families Association will be in the Committee, which they are unhappy about. She supports this, feeling the work should be in governmental hands. Is sorting the final finances of the Fund and requests bills be paid.
Requests Anaesthetics Emergency Fund cheques be cashed without both his and the Hon. Secretary E. A. Sharp's signatures. One is acceptable if either signatory dies.
Is sorting out bills. Recovering tin is not as cost effective in England as in Germany, where its price has increased eightfold. Has received another £429 from New Zealand and may receive another £500 yet.
Westleton, Suffolk — Duncan and Flockhart claim the account from June 11 has not been paid. Will send list of accounts and needs clarity on which are unpaid. Accidentally sent the bill for Miss Guinness twice. Requires a fast response to not lose discount on a bill.
The Duncan and Flockhart bill of June 11 was paid. It was receipted by them on June 21. With list of nine bills paid.
49 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park — Encloses 8 bills, amounting to nearly £200. The clerk mistakenly applied the wrong discount. Asks if he can calculate the correct amount.
49 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park — Encloses another bill to be paid before Christmas. Requests a register of paid accounts. Asks how much money remains.
49 Cambridge Street, Hyde Park — Duncan and Flockhart Co. overcharged them £1 on their bill of November 26, so has credited £1 to their account.
Bedford Hotel, Brighton — Is compiling a report of the Fund for the Committee. Borrowed the Pass Book from the bank to clarify the balance. The final payment from New Zealand appears to be omitted. Asks for clarification.
Onslow has been ill, delaying this response. The accounts are correct, as the £200 referred to by Mrs Collins was actually sent on July 26 and was more than estimated, totalling £429. 15. 11. The 'Secretary to the Treasury' retains a further small sum for them.
33 Belgrave Square — Is compiling a record of voluntary work done during the war for a book to be published by Hodder and Stoughton. Requests information on the address, officers, aims, and fundraising methods of the Anaesthetics Emergency Fund.
