Dunfermline's pride in Burns despite scarcity of his references to the locality. Milnes' great understanding on Sunday; encouragement will do Jones more good than medicine.

The volume contains a table of the names and residences of visitors to Robert Burns’s cottage at Alloway, with comments, verses, etc. At the front is a notice dated 9 Aug. 1941 headed ‘Burns’ Cottage. | Book for entering Visiters’ [sic] Names.’ On the spine is stamped ‘Visiting Book of Robert Burns’ Cottage 1841 to 1845’.

(care of) Savage & Smith, Cloisters, Temple. - Milnes' speech suggested many of the Burns Prize poems contained erroneous claims that Burns was neglected by his contemporaries; fears his own verse might have been rejected on this account. Seeks Milnes' opinion and quotes several lines in defence. Signed 'Spero Meliora'.
Weaverham VIcarage, Norfolk. - Constitution of a new parish within his large living; seeks funds for building work; remembers Houghton as a youngster at Thorne, 'disputing the merits of Burns & Milton as a Poet'.
27 Westbourne Park Villas, Harrow Road, W. - Will meet Milnes on Sunday; encloses further copies of the 'Dream' [no longer present]; poetry of Burns; his request concerning Blackwood; unsucessful attempts to publish a poem, 'The Contention of Love and Ambition' in 1841, now wishes to publish something to make up for lost poetic years; own personal sufferings are not as great as they might be, despite his careworn appearance.
