Dated June-November, 1909 - Five letters primarily concerning the sending of proofs of his book ['Castes and Tribes of Southern India'?]; in the letter of 25 June he writes that he has been made a companion of the Indian Empire, and enjoyed his visit to Trinity 'except the Trinity clock at night'; in the letter of 4 July he suggests it should be a punishable offence for census officers to publish without getting their botanical synonyms right; in the letter of 9 November he writes that he will be staying with [A. C.] Haddon to lecture at the Anthropological Club.
Langton House, Charlton Kings, Cheltenham. Dated 21 September 1906 - Thanks him for 'Adonis, Attis, Osiris'; is reading [Edgar] Thurston's 'Ethnographic Notes in Southern India' and is finding much that is new.
Somerford, Adyar, Madras. Dated 20th December 1916 - Thanks him for his letter, will convey to Miss Grove his thanks for her help; Dr [John Robertson?] Henderson suggests that he contact K. Ranga Achariyar of the Government Agricultural College, Coimbatore, who has done similar work for Dr [Edgar] Thurston, and who possesses special knowledge of the Todas.
Aldeburgh - Shares his thoughts on reading 'The Worship of Nature': muses on the universe in his breakfast egg, refers to Barcroft’s lecture on the mystery of how eggs came into being; quotes the 'Punch' Einstein limerick; refers to Dr Gann’s discovery in the Yucatan, and Sir Aurel Stein’s excavations in Central Asia; doesn’t think they will strengthen Elliot Smith and Perry’s diffusion theory; refers to the festival of Ucharal as described in [Edgar] Thurston’s 'Omens and Superstitions of Southern India' and ‘droit du Seigneur’ in Coulton’s 'Medieval Village'. Mentions a fierce storm in November and subsequent flooding in Aldeburgh.
