Leghorn [Livorno]. - Asks Milnes to again press the claim of Alexander Macbean for the Consulship at Leghorn; his supporters include Col. Verner and Messrs Colquhoun and Mageachy; the present Consul here died this morning; Macbean has built a fine church here and defended it from 'the nasty incursions of the selfish Presbyterians'; the Free Church threatens to send a Minister and Consul opposed to the Anglican cause.

2 rue de B[os?]ton, Boulogne. - MacCarthy owns Milnes a favour; can something be found for Montesquieu Bellew, the husband of his sister-in-law, who has fallen upon hard times; his abilities. Gambier plans to leave Boulogne as 'the late atrocities in Paris give one a feeling of insecurity - we knew that all was prepared to imitate them here had the cause prospered there'; hopes a Church appointment can be found for himself in England.

19 Upper Harley Street. - Encloses Lord Grey's letter [no longer present], which Mr McCarthy allowed him to show to Charles; needs Milnes' assistance in finding preferment; has refused living offered by Sir Thomas Sebright 'because I cannot undertake house-building'; a more retired situation without parochial duties would tempt him to settle in England.
