Part of Papers of Richard Monckton Milnes, Lord Houghton

On embossed notepaper, All Saint's Vicarage, Pontefract. - Thanks Houghton for promising to support bazaar; recent controversy arose from Hammond's reference at Temperance Meeting to excessive drinking within Corporation; advocates abstinence but is not a 'Teetotal fanatic'.

With enclosure: letter from Richard Moxon to Joseph Hammond, 5 Oct. 1877, Pontefract. - Objects to Hammonds description of Pontefract as the most drunken town in England; any intemperance is due to the presence of migrant workers; Moxon will continue to exercise Mayor's prerogative to distribute wine after church services; withdraws support for bazaar to fund alterations at parsonage.
