Byrne expresses his own sympathy in addition.

Embossed notepaper for Rossie Priory, Inchture, N. B. - Recommends unnamed man for Newspaper Press Fund assistance: he was associated with papers in Dundee and Endinburgh but overwork drove him to an asylum; he has now been discharged but is not yet fit enough to support his family.

38 Tenison St, York Rd, Lambeth. - Was a reporter here before going to Cape Town in 1862; financial circumstances have forced him to return without family; could find work through contacts in Auckland, New Zealand; seeks introduction to the Colonial Secretary to request passage. Wrote a successful historical play at Cape Town; is trying to produce it here; suffering from bronchitis. Postscript: is not a member of the Newspaper Press Fund.

Grove Cottage, Woking. - Milnes has no right to lecture him on conduct towards public figures; did not seek funds from the Newspaper [Press] Fund, to which he has been a donor; wished Milnes to intercede in a Literary Fund matter; Byerley’s father and uncle were subscribers.

Royal Literary Fund, 10 John Street, Adelphi, W.C. - Offers to serve as 'Honorary Physician' to the Newspaper Press Fund, as he does at present for the Royal Literary Fund.

330 Kennington Road, S. E. - Her father [Patrick Whitty] was invited to join the Morning Advertiser from the Freemason's Journal thirty years ago; requests return of enclosed letter; he was an able journalist and with George Clifford saw establishment of the Press Fund from which he has had two grants; not eligible for other benefits as he only paid one subscription; asks Houghton to intervene with the Fund; her father has struggled to support a large family; 'you can never guess what those who have been brought up refinedly suffer in misfortune'.

Enclosed: letter from John Scott of the Morning Advertiser to P[atrick] Whitty, Phibsboro Avenue, Dublin, 28 Oct. 1845. Asks Whitty to state preferred terms for engagement; would like to see him permanently appointed; 'brilliant salaries are not to be expected', but the Committee is firmly in favour of appointment.
