The Temple, E. C. - Mary Lake is engaged to be married to the son of a gentleman farmer near Driffield, named Topham; encloses portrait [no longer present]. His father, 'enraged at his marrying beneath himself - has expelled him from the farm he was to have occupied'. Asks if Houghton can do anything to help.

South Metropolitan District School, Sutton, Surrey. - Has been ill with the fever but is getting better now; will be down soon; is very glad her mother is coming down to see her. Has 'mutton and beer and I shall soon get strong again'. Ends with many kisses.
