Laird worked with R. L. M. Synge as a laboratory assistant at the Rowett Research Institute and moved with Synge to the Food Research Institute, Norwich. He subsequently worked at the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Torry Research Station, Aberdeen.
