Herstmonceux - JCH was present at the opening of the New Brighton College. He 'was glad to find that there also they have drawn their Principal from Trinity. He seems a very good man...The Vice-Principal is a Johnian junior Wrangler, Cotterell. By the bye how they do beat us on the Tripos: it seems plain that they must train them better for the struggle, but our training, I am persuaded, is the best for after life'. JCH sends WW back his two proofs [WW ed., Verse Translations from the German, including Lenore, Schiller's Song of the Bell, 1847]. 'Of course one must grieve at Trinity to lose one's friends: but it is the lot & the privilege of the place to send out its missionaries of truth to all parts of the world; & this is our glory'.
