Scope and content
18 Carlton House Terrace, S.W.—Houghton’s son would, he believes, be a great acquisition as a private secretary, but he would not advise him to take the post as there is no salary, the post would not create a claim for other employment, and Granville would reserve the right of appointing his nephew if for any reason he left Gladstone. However, if Houghton’s son would like to see the working of an office ‘at a time of difficulty’ and would like to try it for six months, Granville would be pleased to have him.
