Portée et contenu

Wallington, Cambo, Morpeth. - Glad that Bessy has arrived safely. Sorry that Julian will soon be leaving, he is 'an irresistibly sweet child, and of great promise'. George came last night and is leaving tonight with Charles. More shocked about Louvain [or Leuven: sacking by German troops, including the burning of the university library] and the tone of the announcement by the German government 'than by any event of [his] life-time'; prospects for Belgium, France and even England if invaded are bad, though 'it will be harder to get at... Oxford and Salisbury Close than at Louvain Town Hall and University'. Envies Robert reading [Boswell's?] "The Hebrides" aloud. Is reading Roger North's "Life of Dr John North", the Master of Trinity, with 'immense amusement'.
