Scope and content

Bound in tooled leather; loose boards reattached and new spine added by conservators when the book arrived at Trinity. Leather panel with title and decorative border in gilt pasted to front inside cover. Following the front endpaper and flyleaf, the volume is paginated 1-288. Pagination then begins again from 1-180. Eight blank and unpaginated leaves follow, before pages numbered 295-334. At the back there is an unpaginated index of six leaves, and three blank flyleaves. Pages have been trimmed for binding, with marginal text and pagination sometimes affected; in some cases page numbers are almost lost entirely.

Commonplace book, containing notes on various topics and quotations, with marginal headings. Subjects discussed include classical authors, French and German drama, literary journals, Pelagianism and free will, philosophy of mind, the Huron language, volcanos, et cetera.

Index at back: alphabetic sections, subdivided by subsequent vowel, drawn up in advance. The latter part of the book does not appear to have been fully indexed; it has few marginal subject headings.
