Historia
According to his children Louisa Margery and Robert’s birth certificates, Joseph Lowe was 37 on 31 July 1815 and 40 on 29 Sept. 1817, placing his birth in August or September 1777 (assuming that his age on the certificates refers to his age on the date of registration and not of birth). This agrees with his age recorded at the time of his death (see below). He was recorded as being from Brechin, Scotland, while his wife – whose name was spelt both Marie and Maria – was from New York. Both children were born in Caen, which is where Lowe wrote that his family was living in 1824 in a letter to Dawson Turner (O.13.28/No. 52).
Southwark parish register documents that a Joseph Lowe, aged 56, was buried on 25 January 1834. This date of death is corroborated by the fact that Joseph Lowe is last mentioned in a newspaper available on the British Newspaper Archive in 1833, in articles from January confirming that he would be offering classes in commerce at King’s College, London that term, and those dated later in the year listing him as a contributor to the Edinburgh Encyclopaedia, which was published between 1808 and 1830 (see, for example Morning Post - Saturday 12 January 1833 and Atlas - Sunday 21 July 1833 respectively).
