        History

Christian Scipio Mactaggart was born at Inverary on 22 January 1861, the daughter of Dugald Campbell Mactaggart (1825–81), Church of Scotland minister of Inverary from 1848 to 1865, and his wife Mary Jane (1833/4–82). At the time of the 1891 census she was the head of the household at 1 East Trinity Road, Leith, the other occupants being her sister Dora Jane (born 1868) and a servant. Both sisters were described as being of private means. In 1901 and 1911 the sisters were living in Kensington. By the former date Christian was working as a school secretary, and in the latter year she was described as the secretary and registrar of the London School of Economics. She later lived in Italy and Australia, and died at 2 Langshaw House, New Farm, Brisbane, on 23 June 1943, aged 82. Her name has been given to a scholarship and a prize at the LSE.
