        Historique

        Maton was elected fellow of the Linnean Society in 1794 and served as vice-president. He was also elected fellow of the Royal Society (1800) and of the College of Surgeons (1802).
        He was appointed physician-extraordinary to Queen Charlotte in 1816 and later became physician-in-ordinary to the Duchess of Kent and Princess Victoria.
        He also wrote and published antiquarian and botanical works, including Observations relative chiefly to the natural history, picturesque scenery, and antiquities of the western counties of England, made chiefly in the years 1794 and 1796.
