Scope and content
The purpose for which these notes were made is unclear, but they may have been compiled with a view to producing a paper on ‘The succession of printers 1557–1640’ (see 4/23–4). An attempt has been made to arrange them in a logical order, but most are of a casual nature and their interrelation is often unclear. 4/1–5 are alphabetical lists of printers, none of which continues past the letter D; 4/6–10 are lists of presses and printers compiled from Arber’s edition of the Stationers’ Register; 4/11 is a list of printers not admitted; 4/12–14 are lists of printers and their successors; 4/15 is a list of transfers needing investigation; 4/16–22 are notes on various sequences of succession; 4/23–4 are general notes on the manner in which printers succeeded one another. A blank sheet found with these papers has been put with the sheet which preceded it (4/1).
