        History

        Smith was born at Highgate on 19 March 1797, the son of George and Frances Mary Parker Smith, and was baptised at St Michael's church there on 30 April (parish register, via Ancestry).

        He spent some time in China and the East Indies, where his daughters Emily and Henrietta were born, and he was later a member of the Royal Asiatic Society.

        By He was for a while a director of the Bank of England.

        By 1861 he was living at 25 Oxford Square in London. He died there on 28 March 1876 and was buried at All Saints' church, Sanderstead, in Surrey, on 1 April (parish register, via Ancestry).
