History
William Charles Sylvester, the eldest son of William Thomas Mainwaring Sylvester, rector of Castleford, and his wife Charlotte, was born on 27 September 1843 and baptised at the church of St Thomas in the liberty of the Rolls in London on 1 November. By the date of the 1861 census, when he was 17, he had joined the West Yorkshire Rifles. On 14 June 1866 he married Mary, the eldest daughter of Major William MacDonald, and at that time was described as a Lieutenant in the West Yorkshire Rifles and Chief Constable of Rochdale. In the 1881 census he is described as an evangelist, or missionary. He died in Palestine on 7 November 1888.
