Frederick Thomson was born in 1859. He worked for a firm of calico merchants, Claflin & Co. He was involved in voluntary work and organised boys' clubs, particularly the Hugh Oldham Lads Club, Manchester. In 1914 he moved to Cambridge to be near his brother J. J. Thomson. He died in 1917.
