Scope and content
The one-act play 'White Lies' was written to accompany 'Black Comedy' as a double-bill when it transferred to New York in 1967. Shaffer rewrote the play with the new title 'The White Liars' for the production at the Lyric Theatre in 1968. He rewrote the play once again for the 1976 production directed by Paul Giovanni under the title 'White Liars.' There are not many versions of this much revised one-act play present here: most of material relates to a screenplay, which does not appear to have been produced.
