Dawson Turner was born and spent much of his life at Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. He was admitted as an undergraduate at Pembroke College, Cambridge, in 1793, but returned to Yarmouth before graduating, in order to take his place in the family banking business.
For some years Turner's chief interest was botany, particularly mosses, and he published several works on the subject and corresponded with many of the notable botanists of his day. In later life he concentrated on antiquarian pursuits, amassing a valuable collection of historical documents and autographs, as well as a substantial library which was eventually dispersed in a series of sales. He was a Fellow of various learned bodies, including the Royal Society, the Linnaean Society, and the Society of Antiquaries.
In 1796 Turner married Mary Palgrave, by whom he had eight surviving children. Mary Turner and her daughters were talented amateur artists; they were tutored in drawing by John Sell Cotman and also mastered the arts of etching and lithography. Between them they produced a significant number of sketches and prints, especially portraits and architectural studies, examples of which were often used by their father to embellish his books.

The index also refers to a letter from T. F. Dibdin, dated 27 Sept., which is not in the volume, but this entry probably relates to his letter marked ‘Oct. 15?’ (No. 76), which is otherwise not mentioned. Two of the documents in the volume (Nos. 8 and 17) are not mentioned in the index, nor is a letter from Hudson Gurney of 15 Aug., now TURN II K2/10, which was cut out from before No. 30, unless the reference to a letter of that date from W. J. Hooker is a mistake.

On the spine is stamped ‘CORRESPONDENCE | JUL.–DEC | 1821’. The binder’s label of Diboll & Son, bookbinders, of Howard Street, Yarmouth, is pasted to the front pastedown. On the back of the front flyleaf is written: ‘The Index in the 1st Part of the year 1821 necessarily includes he Letters which are bound in the present Volume, as well as those in the preceding one.’ The contents are described individually.

The documents are numbered in the order in which they stand. Seven documents (Nos. 3a, 12a, 35a, 39a, 55a, 105a, and 128a) were not given numbers when the contents were originally numbered and the number 111 was omitted by mistake. One document (No. 10) is out of order because its date was misread when the contents of the volume were being prepared for binding.

In descriptions of ‘Extent and medium’ a ‘single sheet’ is a single unfolded leaf of paper comprising two pages; a ‘folded sheet’ is a sheet of paper folded in half, comprising two leaves and four pages. Folded sheets have been described as such even in cases where most of one leaf was cut off in order to fit a sheet into a volume.
