Richard Hare, the son of Richard Hare (1700-1776) and his wife Martha, née Harford (1717-1786), was baptised at Bath Abbey on 25 April 1747. His siblings included James (1748-1808), a clergyman, Robert Edward (1752-1811), John (1754-1784), Charles (1756-1801), a naval captain, Martha (1758-1840), and Charlotte (1763-1808). His children included Richard (1793–1875), who became a lieutenant in the Navy. He died on 22 November 1825, aged 78.
