There is a sticker bearing the printed number ‘’896.’ at the foot of the spine, and ‘MSS 5 Charles’ has been written inside the front cover, perhaps by a bookseller or auctioneer. The armorial bookplate of Robert, Earl of Crewe, is pasted below this inscription.

On the spine is written ‘Charles. 9. Liure 1. et 2’. The volume contains the text of the first two Books of Varillas’ Histoire de Charles IX. This work, which comprised ten Books in all, was first published in two volumes in 1683, though it had previously circulated in manuscript.
