History
Born 29 May 1797. Baptised Maria Turner 13 July 1797 (bishop’s transcript of Yarmouth parish register). (She is also named Maria alone in the marriage register and the censuses of 1851, 1861, and 1871, but the ODNB calls her Maria Sarah.) Married William Jackson Hooker at Irstead, Norfolk, on 24 Mar. 1815. The couple lived for a short while at Halesworth in Suffolk, where their first son, William Dawson Hooker, was born on 4 Apr. 1816. A second son, Joseph Dalton Hooker, was born on 30 June the following year, and three daughters followed. On W. J. Hooker’s appointment as Regius Professor of Botany at Glasgow University, the family moved to that city. Lady Hooker died at Torquay on 26 Sept. 1872, aged 74.
