London. - Thanks his uncle for his 'affectionate and valuable letter'. Feels 'awestruck, and at times quite depressed in spirits by this change [his election as an MP]; hopes his uncle will not think him a 'coxcomb' for saying that nevertheless he he has a 'strong hope and confidence' that if he lives he will 'do something... of which my dear friends and relations shall have no reason to be ashamed'. Hopes to see his uncle soon; asks him to write to him 'now and then', and he will 'value your letters both as guides of conduct and as proofs of affection'. Best wishes to his relations; particular thanks to Matthew for his congratulation.
