14 Calverley Park, Tunbridge Wells. -Thanks Trevelyan for sending him his book ["The Bride of Dionysus"]; he makes 'the old legends live again'. Wonders if the opera has been performed yet, as Trevelyan says the music [by Donald Tovey] is completed; will look out for notices. Trevelyan's vers libre does not appeal to him, but 'poets have every right to try experiments', and he is right to use it if it seems most suitable to him. Is perhaps most interested by Trevelyan's 'handling of hex. metre [hexameter]' in his version of Lucretius, which seems to use six accents rather than regular feet; has doubts, which also apply to [Robert] Bridges, [Henry] Newbolt, [Lascelles] Abercrombie and others, whether speech-accent gives 'sufficient certainty'; discusses with examples. Otherwise he admires the lines as a 'scholarly exercise'. Has never understood the metre of "Attys" [Catullus 63], in the original or in other translations; amuses him to 'what different views' people seem to have. Has written a great deal about metre: this is not the sole criterion for judging poetry, but he does take it seriously, for 'is it not that alone which differentiates it from prose?'; perhaps that is why he thinks the lines from [Sophocles's] "Ajax" most successful. Remembers Trevelyan quoting the chorus [from the "Bride of Dionysus" itself] on page 13 to him. Hopes that the Trevelyans are well; he and his wife much enjoyed last summer and hope for more of the same this year. Have been at home all winter 'as usual', but now thinking of travelling, though after the Browning centenary celebration in Westminster which they hope to go to; wonders if they will see Trevelyan there. Has written little this winter apart from correspondence and a few reviews and 'letters to weeklies etc'; encloses something about hexameters from the "Modern Literary Review", which gives copies of articles instead of cash payments ["Homer's Odyssey: A Line-for-Line Translation in the Metre of the Original by H. B. Cotterill", The Modern Language Review", Vol. 7, No. 2 (Apr., 1912), pp. 257-262; no longer present]. Was glad to get [Henry Bernard] Cotterill's book for review as it is published only in an expensive edition, but was disappointed by his verse; had hoped for better from things he had written about prosody. Trevelyan's brother [George] has had a 'grand success' with his books about Garibaldi, which he himself has read with 'delight' and 'reviving of old enthusiasms', while Trevelyan's father is still writing new books and having old books republished.

Refers to an enclosed piece [not included], which, together with a few lines he wrote to Arthur, give his view of William. Reports that on the whole he was 'agreeable surprised with his aspect'; claims that he does not look very ill, but that he looks like someone in the first stage of convalescence. States that others who came to the same [Ad Eundem?] Club dinner in Oxford also thought him to be looking better than they expected. Reports that Digby told him that he had spoken to Mr Symonds, who attends William, about the latter's attack.

Asks her to thank Arthur on his behalf for the signatures. Announces that he sent in his thirteen propositions [for college reform] that day. Declares that 'the extent to which [he is] reforming mankind at present is quite appalling'. Reports that they have 'a fine old Conservative Institution which will resist many shocks of feeble individuals like [himself].' Claims that these Conservatives 'are too triumphant at present', and refers to Italian affairs, including the failed revolution, Victor Emmanuel and Garibaldi. Mentions that Trevelyan was present at the latter's arrest. Undertakes to tell her when anything is settled about [Roden] Noel's visit. States that he has asked him to visit some time in December, since he [Henry] intends to go abroad for about three weeks at the end of the month. Announces that he must be back in Cambridge earlier than usual after the Christmas vacation, as he 'holds the dignified post of "Father of the College"!'

Robin Ghyll, Langdale, Ambleside. - Very glad that Bob likes "The [Life of John] Bright", and understands 'both the difficulties and the possibilities of the task'; Bob is right that 'one never gets quite inside Garibaldi': doubts he 'was ever quite inside himself'. Janet is recovering steadily; she has a masseuse for her back, but they hope she will be better in a week; she 'injured a muscle jumping over a flower-bed!' so Bob must tell Bessie not to do that. Much appreciates [Gordon] Bottomley's approval of "...Bright". Will soon send some long and 'not very easily legible' letters about his travels, since Bessie would like to see them; is currently using them to write articles for the "Nation" and "Contemporary".

Stocks Cottage, Tring. - Thanks Bob for his postcard; will 'much want' to hear his criticisms [of his own book about George Meredith?]. Is to write a 'causerie' for the "Speaker" on [Alfred William] Benn, though not until June as he recently did one about [Thomas] Hardy's "Dynasts". Is working on a book about Garibaldi in 1949: 'far and away the best fun' he has ever had in writing; had a 'splendid time walking over the ground at Easter'. Asks if Bob has read [Gabriele] D'Annunzio's "Canzone di Garibaldi" ,'fine historical poems'. Hears 'rumours that the Shiffolds are likely to become more populous' [Elizabeth is pregnant], which would give him more pleasure than anything 'in these recent very fortunate times' and 'seems a proper sequel to the General Election'.

Welcombe, Stratford on Avon. - Delighted to hear of what Robert, Elizabeth, and Julian are reading [something by Byron?]; 'curious' how 'such trifles' are only written by people of the calibre of Byron, Scott, Burns and Macaulay; gives several quotations. Gratified by what Robert says about the letter to Lady Desborough [11/199 probably also refers to this]. Robert seems to be confusing separate incidents from Garibaldi's life. Best Christmas wishes to Robert and family. Caroline much 'appreciates and cherishes' Elizabeth's letters.

Chhatarpur. - Thanks Trevelyan for his 'kind letter of the 10th'; it is only because of Trevelyan's own 'kind nature and good-heartedness' that he makes 'so much of what little I did'. In turn, thanks Trevelyan for the present of his brother [George]'s Garibaldi and the Thousand.

Very glad to hear that Dickinson is now 'quite fit to go on with his long & distant journey'. Their best wishes go with both Trevelyan and Dickinson, and Forster, and they all hope they will 'fully enjoy' their travels. 'You know that H. H. [the Maharaja] likes & loves nothing better in the world than the society of cultured English gentlemen. I can say that from my personal experiences of the last 19 years that I have been with him. He missed your company very much - in fact he was very much depressed after you left'. It was not until 'long after that the loneliness & monotony of his life was somewhat relieved by a visit from Miss Cohen and her brother' but they could only stay a couple of days and left for Gwalior. Showed Trevelyan's letter to the Maharaja, who 'was very much impressed with what you said therein about your visit to Chhatarpur & the hospitality of its ruler'; the Maharaja has received Trevelyan's letter to him 'from the jungles of Salim' and will reply soon. He 'read it and re-read it in my presence and was much impressed. He was also very glad to hear that you met Sir Theodore [Morison], whom he he is going to see at Patna or Lucknow'. The 'Hon. A. G. G. [Assistant Governor General?] is due at Chhatarpur om his official tour about 20 Feb., and the Maharaja cannot fix a definite date [to see Morison] until that tour is over.

Is glad to hear that Nanhu Mal was useful to them at Benares. Notes that Bob finds 'the Persian alphabet very troublesome', but thinks if he takes it seriously he 'won't find it so unmanageable in the long run': hopes he will 'soon get over the difficulty' so that soon Haq will 'have the pleasure to correspond with you in Persian language & quote Persian poets'. Had a 'very kind letter from Mr Forster' recently, who seems to have 'very pleasant recollections' of his visit to Chhatarpur'.

Yesterday was a public holiday [] and the Maharaja 'held a dunbar last night to offer thanks to the Almighty on this happy occasion'. The Maharaja has 'entered into a singular correspondence with Dr. Carpenter [perhaps Edward Carpenter?] & has received many of his books of late'; has also had Dickinson and Forster's books 'direct from England' and is 'much interested in all these books': Haq always finds him with one in his hand. The Diwan told Haq recently that he had received [Trevelyan's father's] Life of Macaulay from Trevelyan.

Wonders if Trevelyan [and his friends?] 'can induce H. H. to visit England - It is sure to do him much good from every point of view'; he himself is 'only his servant & my solicitations in this respect can therefore be of very little avail'.

Asks to be remembered to Mr Dickinson.

Church Cottage, Northfield, Worcestershire. - Was engaged as a clerk in the Examiner's Office of the Customs but resigned to join Garibaldi's army last autumn; served throughout campaign; Milnes' recent rebuke to the MP who saw '"the finger of God in the death of Count Cavour"'; hopes this sympathy will induce him to assist Bowra in regaining his post; Sir William Verner will vouch for his character; has permission to compete for a student interpretership in Japan but may have to wait years for a vacancy; quotes personal particulars and referees.

14 Chenies St., Gower St. - Has sent verses previously; is a tutor, 'but talking does not agree with me'; supporting invalid father; seeks aid to publish Pages of Song, which includes a poem called 'Rena'; unsuccessful attempts at publication, including a journal called The London Letter. Verses: 'Ben Dizzy's Career'; 'Garibaldi's Hope'; extract from 'Albert the Good'; 'My Hope'.
