The Abbey, Carlisle. - Originally enclosing Rawnsley's letter about Sty Head [Pass] to the "Daily News", who asked him to send them something to back up Sale's [?] article. Believes that 'the scare is quite premature', but suggests that Trevelyan writes a letter of protest to the newspaper showing that the road would be 'a blunder not only for the Ratepayer's point of view' but also for hotel and lodging-house keepers, and 'what a National loss the quiet of the '"Scafell Massive" would be to Great Britain".
2, Cheyne Gardens, S.W. - Encloses a letter from Rawnsley [13/230]; does not need it returned. Rawnsley thinks there is 'no immediate danger' [of a road being built over Sty Head Pass], and George will not write to the newspapers 'till and unless there is'. Differs from Rawnsley in believing that the Wrynose [Pass] is 'a proper and legitimate old roadway' which should not have gone out of use and could be restored; Sty Head is 'totally different.
Lower Gatesgarth, Buttermere, Cockermouth (replies to be sent to 2 Cheyne Gardens). - Has written to Canon Rawnsley to discover what has 'really happened' [re the proposal to build a road over Sty Head Pass: see also 14/87 and 13/230]. Hopes that the 'Daily Nuisance' ["Daily News"] is wrong. He and his family will be in London from Monday and glad to see Bob when up in town. Is bringing out a book of essays ["Clio, a Muse and Other Essays"] in November.
