Part of Papers of Robert Calverley Trevelyan and Elizabeth Trevelyan

The Hermitage, 9 Heathcote Street, Mecklenburgh Square, London W.C.1. [home of Penelope Wheeler]. - Thinks that Julian will hear from [John] Masefield or [his daughter] Judith whether they can send the car to meet him next Tuesday, and that the Bletchley train gets in [to Oxford] at 12.35; he will have to get a taxi if not. Julian is getting iron bars to hang the two big [stage] cloths on [for Bob's play "Meleager"]; if Julian thinks the one behind should go on a wooden batten he should perhaps write to Judith with details. The wings can be left until he comes. Judith will get Julian a room at the hotel for Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday; he himself will be at the theatre at 2 pm on Wednesday.

Hopes to come up by the train he mentioned. Mrs [Penelope] Wheeler thinks that the shrine [in the scenery for Bob's play "Meleager"] is 'a little too much thrown back from the stage, in perspective' and wonders if Julian could make it 'seem a little nearer'. Bob himself does not think it matters much, but if Julian could do this it would be good; no need to worry if he has already painted it. Is going to Oxford today and will find out when the scenery should arrive there, and when it would be best for Julian to come. Wants to go back to London by an 'early breakfast train' on Wednesday.

Addressed to Julian at 26 Trinity Street, Cambridge. - Thanks for Julian's letter, which he is sending on to Bessie at Welcombe. Will have a rehearsal [of his play "Meleager"] tomorrow, and thinks Mrs [Penelope] Wh[eeler] is 'sure to approve' Julian's designs for the side wings; will let him know. Suggests putting the image a 'little more in the shadow', but the design seems 'very good'. Thought of coming to Cambridge on Friday afternoon after the rehearsal, to see the Pirandello, but thinks he will still come on Tuesday morning, about lunch time.

National Liberal Club; addressed to Julian at the Shiffolds. - Has seen B., who says Mary F[letcher?] cannot have Julian until Wednesday 18 September; Julian could probably therefore see Mrs [Penelope] Wheeler [about a forthcoming production of Bob's play "Meleager", for which Julian painted the scenery?] if Bob could arrange for a meeting at her house on Wednesday morning.

Has been to two rehearsals [of his play "Meleager"] at Mrs [Penelope] Wheeler's; seems that they will have to stage the tomb of Meleager painted on the side curtain on the spectator's right [sketches a plan of the stage] for reasons involving actors' positions. Agreed that the side-cloth can be used throughout the play, so Julian does not need to make two cloths for that side, which would cause more trouble for the performance; suggest painting poplars there. Hopes the canvas has come from Higson; tells Julian to send on any bills. Glad he thinks he has found a place to paint. The rehearsals, every Wednesday and Thursday, are going quite well. Will come to Cambridge for a night towards the end of the month. Glad that Julian likes his new rooms [at Trinity].

Glad that Julian can see no difficulty with the idea of putting a tomb in the right wing [of the scenery for Robert's "Meleager"]; does not want him to alter the backcloth with the three tombs. Likes his suggestion of putting the shrine in the painted side-cloth on the opposite wing, but must discuss it with Mrs [Penelope] Wheeler when they rehearse again on Wednesday; suspects she may think it is too important to be 'a mere painting half-hidden in the side-wing', but she may appreciate the extra room it would give for movement on stage. Glad Julian has a place to paint; he should not worry about the canvasses being late. The first performance is on 7 November; expects they will all go to Oxford for rehearsals three days before. 'So you have seen Wittgenstein, and survive!'. Likes him himself, though sees 'one could easily have too much of him', and 'the younger generation don't seem to be able to put up with him'; a shame he is 'always so serious'. Julian seems to have 'got together a good team of Heretics' [speakers for the Heretics Society]. Will certainly go to the L[ondon] G[roup exhibition]; had no idea Julian had sent anything. Sorry he will not be able to come to Cambridge on 23 October, because of rehearsals, but will come another time. If Julian thinks it necessary, he should send a small sketch of his idea for the side-cloth with the tomb; would also like to see one for the opposite wing showing the shrine if they decide on it, but that can wait. Went to see Shaw's "Apple Cart" and thought it 'very good fun', with 'the politics not very serious, and certainly not offensive'.

Went to the L.Gr. [London Group] Show yesterday; thought Julian's pictures 'looked very well'; went with [Hasan] Suhrawardy, who also liked them; saw Roger [Fry] who 'thought the water-colour came off best but was interested in the others too'. A 'great thing' to have got them shown, since the 'hanging committee is quite strict and impartial' and would not have shown them just to please [Frederick] Porter. Liked Porter's 'snow picture', as well as Fry's landscape and [Duncan] Grant's still life. Rehearsals [for Robert's "Meleager"] on Wednesday went quite well; Mrs [Penelope] Wheeler likes [Julian's] idea of painting the shrine on the wing-cloth, which will allow more room for the actors, as well as the tomb on the opposite side. Suhrawardy thinks that a 'vaguely suggested image' on the shrine 'would worry the audience', so it should be assumed to be inside; Robert is not sure whether he is right, but thinks Mrs Wheeler will want the image suggested. Has paid Higson's bill for the canvas. Lists the rehearsal dates; supposes that Julian will be able to get the cloths to Oxford by 4 or 5 November. Will come to Cambridge if he can if Julian wants him to; asks if he could send a sketch of his designs. They seem to be finding some costumes which will meet Julian's 'requirements'.

The Cherry Orchard, Stonor, Henley-on-Thames. - Thanks Trevelyan for his letter; wrote as he advised to Mrs [Penelope] Wheeler and suggested 1 October for the first rehearsal [of Trevelyan's play "Meleager"]. Cannot make any this week, and must then go to Nottingham on 2 October till the end of the week for the National Liberal Federation conference; suggests rehearsing regularly on Wednesday and Thursday after that; she could arrange to stay in London each Wednesday night. Mrs Masefield suggests they should work at Boars Hill for at least three days before the performance, so everyone can 'get accustomed to the little theatre'. Looking forward to meeting Trevelyan again and working 'with... and for' him in "Meleager".
