Sends copy of letter from von Humboldt to Sir James Graham; previously thought Milnes his most 'rash and enterprising patron'; no situation would induce him to part with original testimonial; was graciously received by Lord Westmorland. Contains copy by Moriarty of letter in French, 11 Apr. 1846, from Alexander von Humboldt to Sir James Graham: Berlin. - Introduces Mr Moriarty, whose departure after a long residence will be much regretted; his services to German literature and commerce; entertains high regard for him and would like to help him obtain a Professorship to advance the study of foreign literature.

56 Wilhelm Strasse, Berlin. - Will Milnes intercede with Lord Lincoln as appointments are being made; also has support of friends in Ireland and a strong letter from von Humboldt; will come over shortly to importune those who have not given support to 'one of the Martyrs of Science'; desires to know 'whether you would wish me to obtain for you or any of your more particular enemies an estate or two in Gallicia, as I think I could do something with the Austrian Molly Maguires. There are, however, still upwards of 17 out of 900 landed proprietors alive'.

15 Bury Street, St James. - Seeks an appointment in one of the new Irish colleges, 'even though I were not a Roman Catholic Graduate of Trinity College Dublin, Berlin Professor, relative of O'Connell's and the agitating repeal Peer Lord Ffrench'; can Milnes advise him whether to obtain anti-English or anti-Irish certificates; can lecture on German literature, geographical and commercial statistics; political economy and history; 'dazzling prospects when he rejected offer of a Repeal Wardenship, 'with liberty to wear the uniform of the '82 Club'; would appreciate a swift reply as he plans to return to Berlin if unsuccessful.
