Crumpsall Hall. - John Milnes was to have called on him but was advised to stay at the Mosley Arms Hotel in Manchester when he became ill; he subsequently called at two in the morning claiming to have been led there by Divine Providence; encloses details [no longer present] of his unstable condition on returning to Manchester; saw him there when he seemed better and explained his delusion; stated that he had been summoned back to London; Laws arranged money and escort for the purpose; John Milnes' agent Mr Rundall regrets the calamity which has overtaken him. Advises Richard Milnes not to renew invitation for a while.

[lodging with] Mr Parry, 3 Mill Road, Everton near Liverpool. - Captain Laws, RN, invited him to learn railway business in Manchester; became ill with a congestive complaint and came here to recuperate; requests £50; anxiety about former debts hastened illness.

17 Throgmorton St, London. - Mr [Offley] Shore trying to contact his old friend John Milnes in order to assist him; they have discussed John Milnes attack, which might have been due in part to criticism from his brother about seeking employment in the Railway; he was also anxious about money; Rundall grieved to hear of the incident but hopes John Milnes might be well enough to take up the post; has heard from him in Everton but does not know what his circumstances are.

3 Mill Road, Everton near Liverpool. - Was unaware that Monckton Milnes had discharged £20 order when he requested the loan; hopes to repay him soon; understands that Captain Laws has had to fill the offered place but may be able to offer another; encloses letter from Mr Shore; £50 loan would free him from worrying commitments. Enclosure: letter from Offley Shore to John Milnes - advises John Milnes not to refuse firm offer of a post elsewhere for a tentative one from himself; hopes to develop a patent in Lancashire; will contact John Milnes from Manchester but cannot guarantee an offer.

17 Throgmorton St, London. - Offley Shore expects to see John Milnes at Liverpool next week; forwards letter from Captain Laws in case Monckton Milnes is not acquainted with events. Enclosures: letter, 9 Nov. 1845, from John Milligan Laws to [James Rundall] - encloses John Milnes' account of the incident; cannot appoint him at the moment but hopes it might be possible later; letter [25 Oct. 1845] from John Milnes to John Milligan Laws, Moseley Arms Hotel. - went out at two this morning in delirious belief that he must meet Captain Laws; Dr Plant will describe his condition, which was worsened by the long walk in the rain; hopes Mrs Laws will forgive the alarm he caused and that his prospects will not be affected; postscript - was attacked by the dogs but one followed him here.

3 Mill Road, Everton. - Regrets his last letter communicated 'the abandonment of Mr Shore's intention'; improved health; hopes Monckton Milnes will revoke objection to advancing him £50; owes Mr. Rundall £62 12s 3d for previous advances, including a little subsistence pay; is living as frugally as he can,

9 West Street, Paradise Fields, Hackney. - Cannot improve position without Monckton Milnes' influence; seeks a public appointment suitable for a man of active habits; has a large sum suspending over him on account of the Military Fund; hopes Monckton Milnes' shoulder is better.
